As a Sr. Manager Operations Excellence-Field Automation at United Rentals, you will gain and sustain a competitive advantage for the Company by leading the development, implementation and sustainment of Operational Excellence and FAST Applications projects across the organization assigned by their Director. You’ll work in support of the Operations Excellence/Field Automation team to achieve and drive operational excellence through people, innovation and the use of technology. You will take an active leadership role with the field to help drive sustainment of process improvement and Field Automation Strategy & Technology (FAST) application initiatives.

Responsibilities will also include the following:

  • Take a leadership role in implementing and sustaining FAST Applications and process improvements in more complex locations (including large, high revenue generating, or challenging branches).

  • Work independently to translate best practice processes into action in target Logistics centers. Lead dispatch improvement events.

  • In advance of on-site, provide logistics teams with overview of the objectives of the visit. Educate dispatch teams on process and what success looks like, build relationships, foster feedback and gain buy-in from local leadership and employees for support of FAST Applications and logistics process improvement initiatives. Work with field dispatch teams to develop and implement sustainable action plans with timelines.

  • Gain buy-in from senior leadership to help drive sustainment of FAST Applications and logistics process improvement initiatives.

  • Collaborate with Operations Excellence Analyst and leverage Data-to-Action (D2A) Briefings to identify opportunities, measure impact of improvement events and conduct deeper analysis. Make recommendations to Operations Excellence Director (OED) on insights and follow-ups needed.

  • Lead targeted improvement efforts within Rental Flow process steps, including FAST applications, Service, Logistics, and Inside Sales. Participate in and co-lead complex, system-wide improvement efforts, including Value Stream Mapping.

  • Take a leadership role in developing, training and implementation of initiatives across regions, districts and branches.

  • Deliver improvements in the customer experience and branch financial performance by driving awareness and adoption of FAST Applications, Lean principles, processes and tools

  • Contribute to building a 5S culture across the company.

  • Work closely with Logistics and branch leaders to conduct Operational Excellence and FAST Applications assessments and gap analyses. Prepare historical metric trends, evaluate processes and coach logistics teams on opportunities to implement more advanced dispatching principles.

  • Facilitate the development of action plans with clear timelines. Lead follow-up activities to drive sustainment and accountability, incorporating logistics team feedback. Utilize effective influencing techniques that create a higher sense of urgency and ownership.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in Visual Control Room (VCR), rental flow tools and technology. Drive the adoption of technology/tools to improve logistics, rental flow, including service, and technology platforms.

  • Proficient and knowledgeable at an extensive level in use of the dispatch core principles, process and optimization tools. Coaches dispatchers and central dispatch leaders to deliver measurable performance improvements. Work with dispatch teams to overcome system objections and resistance to change.

  • Coach and work alongside Logistics Teams field leaders to support the implementation and sustainment of various operational process improvements.

  • Participate on cross-functional teams responsible for strategic, broad-based improvement initiatives.

  • Lead the development of in person and virtual training materials.

  • Collaborate on the design of new FAST Applications, Logistics processes, tools and techniques.

  • Lead pilots and roll-out efforts to implement initiatives in the field.

  • Support development and mentor other team members by coaching, sharing experience and feedback.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, marketing, or industrial engineering, or related discipline required or comparable work experience.

  • Project management certification preferred or equivalent process improvement experience with operational activities.

  • Extensive experience in lean, Process Excellence, Six-Sigma, Quality, 5S, or change management preferred.

  • Minimum 5 + years of successful branch or District management experience or equivalent.

  • Must understand financial P&L impact of operations and processes.

  • Customer service experience and background is required.

  • Experience developing process improvements, and Lean or project management experience required.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience leading people and leading change required.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence others without use of positional authority.

  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to recommend process or structural improvements based on fact patterns and trends.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate effectively.

  • Excellent ability to influence peers and field leadership as a subject matter expert.

  • Ability to independently facilitate meetings & events with a diverse group of stakeholders.

  • Ability to influence accountability through demonstrated credibility with empathy

  • Strong presentation and written/verbal communication skills.

  • Advanced level skills in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.

  • Strong project planning and management skills.

  • Ability to work independently, as well as be part of a team.

  • Excellent problem solving and change management skills.

  • Strategic, innovative and creative thinker.
