United Rentals Senior Systems Administrator in Shelton, Connecticut


The Sr. Sys Admin/Sys Admin, Web Technologies and Identity/Access Management is a key member of the IT infrastructure team for the largest equipment rental company in the world. United Rentals has an integrated network of 1000+ rental locations in 49 states and every Canadian province. Essential Duties:

Infrastructure Operations

  • Provide day to day support of Web Applications and Identity & Access Management (IAM) server infrastructure

  • Support hardware and software related to Linux and Windows systems

  • Support Active Directory and ISIM

  • Support Unix/Linux Operating Systems

  • Support the various modules of the F5 Big-IP

Web Applications Infrastructure

  • Work with Development team to optimize environment for enabling mobile, web and e-commerce access to internal point-of-sale (POS) system, RentalMan thru the RM Data Access Layer (DAL)

  • Work with AS400 team and external vendors to optimize environment for for enabling mobile, web and e-commerce access to internal point-of-sale (POS) system, RentalMan thru the RM Data access Layer (DAL)

  • Work with other IT groups on external infrastructure as a service (IaaS) platforms like AWS.

Identity and Access Management (IAM)

  • Evaluate, recommend and implement the IAM products and services required to support the future state needs of the IAM program, which includes directory services (e.g. AD), identity federation (e.g., SAML, SSO and ADFS) and Tivoli ISIM.

  • Work with third-party Software as a Service (SaaS) vendors (Catalyst, Concur, etc) to enable and support IAM

  • Work closely with project and application development teams to serve as a technical advisor and consultant to conceptualize, design and implement IAM solutions that meet their stated business objectives.

  • Provide guidance on the technical aspects of IAM integration, ensuring that relevant technical strategies, policies and practices are applied consistently.

  • Identify opportunities for automation and standardization when needed for the user lifecycle provisioning process (requesting, approving, implementing and auditing user access).

Secondary support for other infrastructure areas as needed

  • Support and manage SQL Server Clusters and Databases

  • Support VMware environment

  • Support Exchange Clusters

  • Support Storage Area Network (SAN)

  • Support Backup systems

Tactical and Operational Management

  • Work with management to develop project plans for system migrations, upgrades and software installations

  • Evaluate new products and provide input on selection of updates and upgrades

  • Performance/Capacity Management: Utilize tools and monitoring techniques, logs, and various reporting techniques in order to recognize trends, identify bottle necks, and advise management on efficiency improvements and/or on ways to improve reliability and availability.

  • Configuration/Change Management: Develop documentation supporting operating system, software changes, hardware architecture, and procedural changes in support of configuration and change management processes

  • Understanding the basic architecture of the applications to provide problem identification, diagnosis and impact assessment

Address users' system issues escalated by the Support Center/Help Desk

  • Diagnose and resolve complex system questions from users

  • Troubleshoot and debug problems


Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience. Computer Science or Management Information Systems (MIS) degree/major is desired or a related field.

Certification for appropriate platforms Windows and Linux is desired.

Experience: At least 6 years of systems administration experience is required.

Desired 7-10 years of experience in enterprise computing environments of 3,000+ users.

Must have a strong knowledge of Linux, Active Directory, Web Application Hosting, Identity and Access Management technologies.

Knowledge of the F5 Big-IP modules is an advantage.

Ability to script in various languages and frameworks (PHP, JS, Zend, Perl).

Proven experience in IT infrastructure planning and development with strong understanding of project management principles.

Other Skills Required: Must possess excellent problem-solving and communication skills

Working Conditions: Office environment in the Shelton, CT Data Center; sitting at desk and working at the computer. On-call and after-hours support is required. Occasional travel is required.
